FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 17, 2013 – 27 Manufacturers to Participate in “Heavy Metal Tour” in North Central Wisconsin

Stevens Point, WI – Nearly 1500 8th grade students from 20 School Districts will be participating in the 2nd Annual North Central WI “Heavy Metal Tour” on October 9, 2013. In conjunction with 27 manufacturing employers, this event is sponsored by the North Central Wisconsin Workforce Development Board (NCWWDB), Nicolet Area Technical College, Northcentral Technical College, Northwoods Manufacturers Alliance, and the Central Wisconsin Metal Manufacturers Alliance.

Each student will tour two of the manufacturing facilities, viewing state-of-the-art technology and learning about opportunities in manufacturing careers. In addition, students will learn about training opportunities at the Nicolet and Northcentral technical colleges and participate in employer presentations on “Gold Collar Careers”. The Gold Collar Careers initiative is a regional effort to inspire students to consider manufacturing career pathways. Many companies in north central Wisconsin offer high tech manufacturing jobs that are pushing the limits of technology by demanding a skilled workforce which understands and embraces the latest machining, electronic, computer, and other technologies, as well as the application of critical and creative thinking skills to solve problems.

“When we planned our first tour last year we set a participation goal of 100-150 students and five employers. To
see the event grow in a year’s time to 1500 students and have the support of 27 employers is beyond fantastic,”
said Bruce Trimble, NCWWDB’s Employer Services Director. “This dramatic increase in participation numbers tells us we’re definitely on the right track to reaching the Tour’s goal of introducing youth to the family sustaining
jobs available to them in north central Wisconsin.”

The following manufacturers are participating in the event and have collectively raised over $14,000 to help offset transportation costs: Advanced Barrier Extrusions, Case, HyPro, NEX-Charter Films, Superior Diesel, Northstar Steel, Printpak, Northland Stainless, Oldenburg Group, Schuette Metals, Norlen Inc., Crystal Finishing Systems, G3 Industries, Greenheck, Imperial Industries, Jarp, L&S Electric, Marathon Electric, Linetec, Merrill Iron & Steel, Wausau Window and Wall, Woods Manufacturing, J&D Tube Benders, Northland Stainless, Lange Machine, Merit Gear, and Zelazoski Wood Products.

The 2nd Annual Heavy Metal Tour is held in October to help celebrate “Manufacturing Month”. Manufacturing contributes to almost half of Wisconsin’s economy. Nearly one in five workers in Wisconsin is directly employed
in manufacturing.
